Basking sharks, scientifically known as Cetorhinus Maximus, are impressive ocean giants. They have mouths that can stretch up to 1 meter wide, which aids in their unique feeding strategy. These gentle giants are known for their filter-feeding behavior, consuming vast quantities of phytoplankton and small marine organisms. In fact, they can filter up to 2,000 gallons of plankton per hour. Despite their enormous size, basking sharks are completely harmless to humans, focusing solely on tiny plankton rather than larger prey.

However, these magnificent creatures are now classified as endangered by the IUCN due to threats like commercial fishing, habitat destruction, and climate change, with the population declining by over 50%. They were especially vulnerable to the fin trade in 1970s Japan. Protecting these gentle giants is crucial for preserving marine biodiversity and the health of our ocean ecosystems.
