The proboscis monkey, native to the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, is one of the most distinctive primates in the world. Its oversized, bulbous nose plays a role in attracting mates and amplifying vocalizations. The proboscis monkey is an excellent swimmer, using its webbed feet and long limbs to navigate riverine environments.

However, this unique species is in grave danger. Habitat destruction due to deforestation and palm oil plantations has led to a dramatic decline in their population. Recent estimates suggest that 80% of the population has decreased over the past 40 years. With their forest homes shrinking rapidly, immediate conservation efforts are critical to prevent their extinction. Protecting their habitat and implementing sustainable land-use practices are essential steps to ensure the survival of these remarkable creatures and the health of the ecosystems they inhabit.
